Teri Malo
Teri Malo was born in Whitinsville, MA and received her BA in studio art from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.Ms. Malo’s work focuses on elemental themes from nature. “My profound interest in painting the coast, and especially the ocean, comes from several things, including a desire to spend imaginative time in this vast and bracing environment. The ocean is a moody and mysterious subject – elusive, constantly changing, and full of surprises. Understanding the abstract patterns of waves and foam, the underlying structure, and the subtle color shifts is an exciting challenge. With each painting I see more and want to dive (at least metaphorically) deeper into the wave.” Recently, Ms. Malo has been working on a new series of Pond paintings inspired by her travels throughout New EnglandWorking on panel instead of canvas allows for more controlled detail – the clear, painterly brushstrokes are layered between transparent glazes – enabling the artist to blur edges and portray the energy and movement of the water.Ms. Malo’s paintings are in a number of public and private collections including the DeCordova Museum of Art, Lincoln, MA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA, the Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI, the Blackstone Group, Ritz Carlton Hotels, Marriott Hotels and Baystate Medical Center. Her exhibition entitled “Beyond a View: The Landscape Drawings and Poetry of Teri Malo” was on view at the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA in 1998. Another solo exhibition featuring oil paintings and poems about the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor was hosted by the Museum of Work and Culture in Woonsocket, RI in 2001. Ms. Malo’s work is also featured in a book entitled 100 Artists of New England published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd in 2010.
